Teach children about stock market investing

Investing in the stock market has been the best way to achieve long term investment returns. You kids would be well served if you thought them about investing in the stock market.

You may be thinking, "How am I going to teach my children about stock market investing?"

Get your children interested in investing!

Don't worry, it's easy!

Kids are interested in money and are open to ideas about how to get more of it. There is plenty of motivation, you don't need to worry about that. The key is finding ways to help them enjoy and learn from investing in stocks.

Here are some ideas and resources I have compiled to help you teach your kids about investing in the stock market.

  • Create an imaginary portfolio - Your kids can make a list of companies that have products that interest them. Nike, Coca-Cola, Ford, The Gap, Microsoft, McDonalds, Mattel and so forth. After you have the list, look up the stock prices for each of the companies. Check back periodically to document the price changes.
  • Talk to your kids about companies - Will Pixar's latest animated movie help the stock price? What happened after the movie came out? Why did the stock price rise or fall?
  • Create a spreadsheet - Document your theoretical gains and losses and make hypothetical purchases and sells. These spreadsheets are also a great way to teach math skills.

Using REAL money invest with your children

When you are ready to setup accounts that your children can become involved in the investment decisions, you have a few options. Your kids can help in the investment decisions in the following types of accounts:

  • Custodial Accounts (UGMA/UTMA)
  • 529 Plans - Education savings accounts
  • DRPS (DRIPS - Dividend Reinvestment Accounts)
  • Joint Tenant Accounts (Account that you jointly own, but you as the parent will control the account until your child is an adult)
