How to Save Money Tips

Here is a list of tips on how to save money for your family. It seems like every week someone emails me with a new tip that I never thought about. I will continue to update this list of money saving tips. Enjoy and save!

  • Gasoline - Get the lowest octane grade if it is allowed by your owner's manual
  • Inflate your car tires - Inflating your tires to the recommended tire pressure specified in your owners manual reduces friction when you drive & therefore saves on gas!
  • Refinance your home - This can save you tens of thousands over the life of your home mortgage. Rates are still at historical lows.
  • Electricity - Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Purchase energy efficient appliances.
  • Heating - Turn the temperature down at night. Throw an extra blanket on the bed & save money!
  • Water heater - If you have an electric heater, explore the option of adding a heat jacket, available at most hardware stores.
  • Seal your house - It has been said that all the cracks in your house add up to having an open window letting cold air in during the winter and hot air in during the summer!
  • Insulate your house - This will save on your heating & cooling bills. If you will be staying in your house for just a few years, this could save on your bills.
  • Groceries - Stay away from brand names. In most cases, the off-brands are just about the same and cost much less. Don't shop at convenience stores because their prices are higher.
  • Use coupons - Also, shop on days when the grocery store doubles them!
  • Use a discount card - At grocery stores, pharmacy's and more. Just make sure they don't have a yearly fee!
  • Pharmacy - Ask for generic drugs instead of the brand names with your doctor's approval.
  • Don't eat out as much - This can be a major area of savings in your family budget!
  • Make dinner at home - Save a ton here and enjoy the family time!
  • Brown bag it - Pack your lunch. Think about it, ordering out for lunch every day ($6/day x 5 days a week, = $30/week. $30/week x 52 weeks = $1,560 a year!)
  • Keep your car - If your car is older and you are not making car payments...keep it running!
  • Try to save every month - Set aside a fixed amount every month and save or invest it. This will add up over time!
  • Don't drink soda - Drink water, it's practically free!
  • Don't buy bottled water - Talk about expensive! Get a water filter if the taste of your tap water makes you shudder.
  • Examine your monthly expenses - Magazine subscriptions, cable tv, DSL, Netflix movie rentals...all of these combined may be a significant part of your budget that can be cut.
  • Shop at discount stores - Wal-Mart, Family Dollar, etc.
  • Laundry - Air dry on the line, it's free!
  • Make purchases online - Ebay is a great source for just about any item you can think of. Many of the products offered are new anyway, but MUCH cheaper!
